Bamboo Forest and Tiger

The combination of bamboo and tiger can be seen on the sliding doors and folding screens of many temples, as it is depicted on the wall paintings of Nagoya Castle's Honmaru Palace. Regarding the tiger in this work, the artist says, “I was conscious of the classic tiger.” Furthermore, by directing the tiger's gaze toward the stairs that lead to the upper floor, “we gave meaning to directions other than the painting surface (on which the picture is drawn).'” In other words, it can be thought of as a pictorial representation of the flow of human movement.
