This series of lacquer works juxtaposes the traditional reddish-brown lacquer tone known as urumi-iro, a color deeply rooted in Japanese aesthetics, with calming indigo blue. The flowing curves overlap and intertwine like the traces of memory and emotion. Together, these forms evoke the encounters, connections, and moments that quietly accumulate over the course of a journey.
Yui Higashibata
Born in Kyoto Prefecture in 1974, Higashibata was raised in a family of lacquer artisans specializing in maki-e. After graduating from high school, he studied under lacquer artist Masaya Suzuki, where he learned the fundamentals of lacquer art. He later studied design and architecture at the Kyoto Institute of Technology. Drawing on both traditional lacquer techniques and the design sensibility cultivated through his practice, he continues to explore new possibilities for lacquer across the fields of art, architecture, and interior design.
