Part of a series of gold-leaf paintings that change with the seasons, Ei celebrates the peony, a flower long associated with early summer in Japan. Inspired by the wall paintings of Kanō Sanraku at Yōgen-in Temple in Kyoto, Kotaro Fukui brings together the radiant beauty of peonies and gold leaf with the aesthetic traditions of Japanese painting that have been handed down through the centuries.
Kotaro Fukui
Born in Tokyo in 1969, Fukui's work A/I was selected for purchase by the Agency for Cultural Affairs in 2003. He received the Medal with the Dark Blue Ribbon in 2006 and 2013. In 2013, he completed the monumental mural Wind and Time (Fūjin and Raijin) for the Okada Museum of Art in Hakone. In 2022, he created the commemorative stage curtain for the name succession of Ichikawa Danjūrō XIII. His works are included in the collections of the Ehime Museum of Art, the Yokohama Museum of Art, and other institutions. He has held numerous solo and group exhibitions in Japan and abroad.
