Fantasy Map of Owari Nagoya Castle Town

Extending across an entire wall, this monumental work traces the flourishing of Nagoya from the Edo period to the present through an imagined vision of the castle town. Approximately 1,000 figures appear within the 30-metre-wide composition, creating a vibrant panorama where past and present converge. Meticulously rendered over two years using an ultra-fine brush, every detail contributes to a vast visual chronicle that preserves and reimagines the city's collective memory.

Toyomi Yaehara

Born in Nagano Prefecture in 1953, Yaehara is Professor Emeritus at the Faculty of Fine Arts, Tokyo University of the Arts. He has participated in numerous international exhibitions, including the 12th Paris Biennale at the Musée d'Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris (1982) and VOICE OF SITE at the SVA Gallery, New York (2005). For this fusuma painting, the artist adopted the name "Yaehara," taken from his hometown in Nagano Prefecture, rather than using his family name, Hoshina.
