Luminous
This work incorporates aged gold leaf dating back approximately 140 years. According to the artist, its subtle variations in tone and luminosity are achieved through a traditional technique known as “Goshikikin layering,” passed down through generations. Positioned beside a window, the surface catches and reflects sunlight throughout the day. As evening falls, deeper tones gradually emerge, revealing another expression of the work. It invites viewers to experience the changing qualities of light over the course of a day and through the passing seasons.
Kohei Murata
Born in Kyoto in 1977. A traditional Nishijin textile artisan specializing in hikihaku (woven gold leaf), Murata is the third-generation successor to the Nishijin workshop “Rakugei Kobo.” In addition to producing hikihaku for obi textiles, he launched his own brand, nobegane, in 2019 and continues to explore new possibilities for traditional craftsmanship through collaborations with brands and creators in Japan and abroad.
