Old Pine

Like Running Water and Pine, this work centers on the auspicious motif of the pine tree. Its powerful branches and foliage spread outward as though welcoming guests. Alongside the Old Pine, the composition features a pheasant—Japan’s national bird—as well as the contrasting forms of the sun and moon on the left and right. According to the artist, the work embodies “the accumulation of a lifetime” and “gratitude for the passage of time.”
